Technique Thursday - Resist Embossing with Paint

Resist Embossing with Paint

This is a fun technique to try with supplies that a lot of you probably already own.

Photobucket
Supplies
stamps
Versamark ink or a pigment ink (something slow drying)
clear embossing powder
heat gun
acrylic paint

1. Stamp your image on flat cardstock.
2. Put embossing powder on the stamped image and tap off extra.
Photobucket
3. Heat emboss.
Photobucket
4. Mix acrylic paint with a little water and paint over the cardstock.
Photobucket
5. Wipe over the painted area with a paper towel and the paint will come off the embossed image and pop through.

Tips and Ideas
**To prevent the embossing powder from sticking in places you don't want it to, rub a dryer sheet over your paper before you start.
**Don't add too much water to your paint or it'll soak your paper.
**Use a textured paper for a different effect.
**Use different paint applicators to get different effects.
**Try the same techinque with ink and a brayer.
**Try using different coloured embossing powders.

Play with this and have fun!

Be sure and let us know if you like the techniques and if there are any you'd like to see on Technique Thursday!
Cheers,

Instructor: Colleen Heidrich
Class Fee: 15.00 Supply Fee: $5.00

In this class, we're going to take a sketch (this month from Debbie Gaydos at http://www.scrappydeb.blogspot.com/) and complete a double page layout in class. The first thing we'll do is choose papers that'll compliment your pictures and I'll be there to help you do that. Then we'll talk about the design, how you might want to change it to make it your own and how to simply get that 2-pager done! You're encouraged to bring pictures to help you pick your papers and so that you can go home with something finished. Remember that the sizes in the sketch can be worked with or your pictures can be cropped. Basic supplies for the layout will be included and then you can purchase any extras that night that you might want to add to your layout as well. I'll help with this too!

Technique Thursday - Ribbon Pleating

OK, so this is a layout I taught in a class a little while ago and one of the techniques on it is the ribbon pleating which can, of course, be done on layouts or cards and adds a nice bit of detail and texture. I've found what seems to be a quick little technique for doing this that I thought I'd share...

First, the best thing about this technique is that you really only need some ribbon and glue dots to do this. I recommend a slightly weighted ribbon so that you're not fussing with it too much. If you use something like taffeta, you'll just have to play with it a little more, but it most certainly can be done.

You're just going to fold over the size of the pleat you want and put the glue dot as close to the outer edge as you can get it. Once you've done that, I just finger press the ribbon a little, but I prefer not to completely flatten it since the reason I like this technique is that it gives some dimension.

Next, you're going to put another glue dot just under the top piece of ribbon to help keep things neat and so that it doesn't pop up on you when you're trying to do more pleats.

Then, you're just going to pick up the ribbon again and fold it into the size of pleat you want and put another glue dot under the outer edge where you want the pleat to go (what would be the right side of the pleat in this picture). Here you can see where I left the glue dot under that edge and then you'd finger press again and put another glue dot under that left piece that's up.

***Fold your ribbon and lay it where you think you want it to check the size of the pleat before you add the glue dot. I don't mind my pleating to be different sizes, but if you're worried about making the pleats the same, check before you glue dot!

In this picture, you can see that I put a magnet on the right side of this since it's not adhered to a page or anything. If it's going on something, you can at this point either start putting glue dots under it to get it to stick on the bottom or I actually use the double sided Sookwang tape (that's used with the Glitter Ritz glitter). The tape is nice because you put a strip down and then just keep pressing the ribbon against it as you get it where you want it.

Things to try:
- rather than using glue dots, you can actually sew the pleats down by machine or by hand
- you can use staples to adhere for a funkier look
- play with different kinds of ribbon and you'll soon find your favs for this technique!
- use a ruler to measure the folds as you do them if you want them all exactly the same

Well, hope this helps those of you that might want to play with this a little! I know this is one of those things that I love playing with and the more you do it, the easier it gets!

Cheers,

Technique Thursday - Distressing

Distressing is by no means a new technique, but I consider it one of those tried and true techniques! Most of these don't take much time and can help add a little texture or depth where you need it. I hope you find something here you haven't tried or that this inspires getting out some old tools!

1. Inking - This is probably my favourite simply because it's quick and easy! I use Cut 'n Dry foam when I edge distress paper with ink because I find I have more control in terms of how much ink I want and the look of it as well. You can try playing with different inks for a little different look!

2. Paper Tearing - Another easy technique and there's no secret to this. Yes, there are edge tearing rulers, but you don't really need them. I think the trick to this not to rush it so you can control where the tear is moving. To add some texture to this, you can also wet your fingers and roll the edges to give more texture. You can ink after you tear and/or after curling, but you don't need to!

3. Edge Distressor - There are different companies that make these (Making Memories and Tim Holtz) for example) and they are simply a tool with a blade in them that you run along the edge of your paper to create texture. You can also ink after doing this if you like the look.

4. Sanding Block from Making Memories/Basic Grey Distressing tools - Basically, all you're doing is sanding your paper as much as as little as you like to remove colour and add texture. This looks great on the edges of photos as well!

5. Wrinkle and Crinkle - Another easy and low cost way to play with texture and distressing is by wrinkling your paper. There's no trick to this - simple crinkle it up in your hand! Unfold and then ink over top and the raised areas will pick up the ink. If you use the Ranger Distress Inks, you can also mist the paper with water to help move the ink around. If you let it dry and repeat this with another colour, you'll get even more colour and dimension. You can iron the paper on a low heat after if it's too bumpy for your liking.

6. Exacto knife - Another tool that can be used in distressing is your exacto knife and you're basically just going to use the blade to take off layers of paper as you like. This works on pictures as well as paper and you have a lot of control with this method. Once again, you can ink afterwards as well!

7. Paint - This can be used the same way inks can and you can use a brush, sponge, or anything you can find that'll give a little texture! These Adirondak inks are great because they actually have a dabber right in them! A lot of recycled items can be used with your acrylic paints to create texture. Just make sure you have the time to let this dry before you play with it again!

Feel free to come in and ask about any of these techniques or products in the store!

How often has this happened to you: You walk proudly over to a loved one to show them the fruits of your labour (a card you have spent the better part of 2 hours on), they take the card in hand, they look at the front and say "Nice!" and then promptly open up the card expecting something to be inside, alas, there is nothing but empty white space and you hang your head in shame. Now imagine this: You walk proudly over to a loved one to show them the fruits of your labour (3 cards you have spent the better part of 2 hours making in a fun class with Tobi), and they look at the front and say "WOW" then they open it up and say "WOW WOW WOW..." You walk away with a smile on your face, and your heart beaming with pride. Decorating a card inside and out makes all the difference! Experience with copic markers and blending (the Copic Workshops are a good stepping stone) are required to be successful in this class. All Supplies Included.
